What The Six Months Actually Looks Like

Three habits. No vision boards required.

01 Build Your Narrative While You're Still Living It

Most people figure out their career story when they're asked to tell it. In the interview. Out loud. To strangers who are evaluating them.

Bold strategy. Terrible results.

Every few months — not obsessively, just occasionally — write a paragraph about what you're learning, what problems you're drawn to, what you'd do differently if you ran your function. Not for anyone. Just for you.

By the time someone says "walk me through your career" — you're not constructing. You're just telling them. Unhesitant. Clean. Completely yours.

That quality is magnetic. And it cannot be faked on a Sunday night before a Tuesday interview. Trust me, everyone's tried.

02 Have Opinions. Actual Ones. Before Anyone Asks.

The candidate who says — unprompted — "I think most transitions fail quietly in the first 30 days because everyone's managing the work plan and nobody's building trust architecture — and by the time it shows up on a RAID log, you've already lost two months"

— that person doesn't sound like a candidate. They sound like someone who already thinks at the level of the role.

That kind of point of view doesn't come from interview prep. It comes from being curious about your domain when nothing's at stake. Pick three: one thing your field gets wrong, one thing changing faster than organisations are adapting, one thing you'd fix if handed the wheel.

Hold those positions for a while. Let them get stronger.

The difference between a fresh opinion and a seasoned one? Panels feel it immediately. You can't microwave conviction.

03 Practice Being Seen When The Stakes Are Low

Here's the one nobody talks about. The one that takes the longest. The one that changes everything.

So many accomplished people underperform in interviews not because they lack substance — but because claiming credit out loud makes them want to disappear into the floor.

If you grew up being told don't show off, let your work speak, be modest — great life advice. Absolutely disastrous interview advice.

Your work does not speak for itself in 45 minutes. You speak for it.

The fix isn't to become insufferable. It's just accuracy. In the meeting where you said "this might be a silly idea but—" — it wasn't silly, don't do that. In the email where you wrote "we delivered" when you actually led — fix it.

Tiny moments. Uncomfortable at first. Completely compound-able. By the time you're in that interview room saying "I built this" — it won't feel like performance. It'll feel like Tuesday.

Walk in with real narrative clarity, actual opinions, and genuine comfort in your own skin — and your prep notes become a confidence layer, not a script. You're not performing. You're having a very well-informed conversation about something you know better than most.

That combination is what panels remember when the room goes quiet and someone says "so. Which one?"
